History and GenesisThe Response to the Chaos of Primitive Streaming

RTP was originally published in 1996 (RFC 1889) by a group of researchers, including Henning Schulzrinne and Stephen Casner. Before it, each video application used proprietary and inconsistent methods to manage time. RTP was created to provide a common layer that standardized the use of sequence numbers and timestamps, allowing interoperability between different devices and manufacturers. It was the birth of modern streaming as a network standard.
